International Theatre Olympiad 2019
Within the framework of the Year of the Theatres, Russia will host the International Theatre Olympiad — one of the main Theatre events of 2019th. In St. Petersburg will tour the best Theatres from 15 countries, as well as regional theatres of Russia. Lectures and master-classes from the leading theatre ambassadors will be given during the Olympiad across the whole country.
In a year of its 25th anniversary, the Theatre Olympiad, for the first time will be held simultaneously in two countries: in Russia and Japan. The opening ceremony will be held on the 15th of June in St. Petersburg, and the Alexandrinsky Theatre will become the main venue of the event. The majority of the performances will take place on the Main and Second Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre.
In St. Petersburg, the theatres of 15 countries will perform their plays: Bouffes du Nord (Paris, France), Berliner Ensemble (Berlin, Germany), FC Bergman (Antwerpen, Belgium), Beijing People's Art Theatre (Beijing, China), National Theatre (Hungary), Theatre ATTIS (Athens, Greece), SCOT (Toga, Japan), Schaubühne (Berlin, Germany), Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theater in Kraków (Krakow, Poland), Piccolo Teatro (Milan, Italy), Chorus Repertory Theatre (Imphal, India), Bulandra Theatre (Bucharest, Romania), Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers (Paris, France) and others, as well as the national theatres from the Russian regions.
The Russian regions will host tours of Petersburg theaters, as well as lectures and master classes from the leading theater ambassadors from around the world.
Theater Olympiad is a large-scale international festival serving as a platform for the development of global theatrical integration and dialogue of theatrical figures from different countries. Theatrical Olympiad was founded in 1993 on the initiative of the world-famous theater director Theodoros Terzopoulos and first held in 1994 in the homeland of the theater - in Greece, in the city of Delphi.
