The Russian Valenki Museum in Moscow

The Russian winter boots made from sheeps wool, or felt, and called valenki in Russian are considered traditional Russian winter wear. Valenki are not as popular as they once were, but they're making a comback and becoming more and more fashionable.

At the Russian Valenki Museum in Moscow visitors can not only learn about the history of valenki in Russian culture and society, but also learn about the history and technology of making them. Valenki have gone through various transition periods, influenced for examply by the invention of the wool combing machine, the desire to go ice skating before modern ice skates were invented and today's version with rubber soles and more modern and fashionable designs.
