Christmas Day Football in the Snow
One way to spend Christmas day abroad is to play football in the snow!
For many Americans Christmas day calls for a family gathering with lots of food and usually an outdoor football game with friends and family, at least where I'm from. Well here in St. Petersburg this year some of us did the same thing. As you know, Christmas in Russia isn't quite here yet, but nonetheless we celebrated with friends and lots of food, then some football in the snow and -10 C (14 F) weather! But it wasn't your usual Christmas day football game, spent tossing around the pigskin. I'm sure you know, but here we play a different kind of football, soccer that is.
For me it was a special day. Spending Christmas away from your family can be nostalgic, especially when you're in a country with a completely different culture that doesn't celebrate Christmas the way you have your whole life. But with the right spirit and good friends you can recreate those Christmas feelings. Spending Christmas day with friends and playing soccer was just what I needed. It also creates a good chance to share your culture and how you celebrate Christmas.
Not to mention that we won and as a result took home the league trophy!
