A Holy History of Russia
The Holy Russia exhibition, which is composed of 450 unique works of Russian art, is now on display at the Mikhailovsky Castle in St. Petersburg. The exhibit was on display last year at the Lourve in Paris, attracting more than 26,000 visitors.
It was Russian President Dmitry Medvedev who at the opening of the exhibition in France suggested that the impressive collection from 25 Russian museums and libraries be shown in Russia.
The current exhibit in St. Petersburg is not the complete collection that was on display at the Lourve, however several unique and rare items well worth seeing. The most prized piece of the collection is a collection of pages from the Ostromir Gospel, the oldest surviving East Slavic manuscript book.
Religion has always been a very important of Russian culture and this exhibition sheds light on the rich history of the Church in Russia and the art associated with that tradition.
The exhibition will be on display through Jan. 20th at the Mikhailovsky Castle, which in itself is worth seeing!
