Lake Baikal is the deepest and oldest lake on Earth – by some estimates, over 35 million years – and the largest freshwater lake by volume. It contains around 20% of the world’s surface freshwater. The deepest point of the lake is 1,642 meters (5,387 feet). Lake Baikal attracts more than 2 million visitors per year with its spectacular scenery, variety of its unique flora and fauna and local settlements with traditions and rituals dating back many centuries.
You can definitely swim in Lake Baikal but if you are not accustomed to swimming in cold water, we recommend to arrive closer to the end of July or August – it’ll be more likely that the water is warm. The weather in Siberia can be unpredictable so it is not always possible to go for a swim, but the spectacular scenery alone will be more than worth the journey.
The fastest way to get to the lake is by plane to the city of Irkutsk. Alternatively, you can take a train from Moscow or St Petersburg and experience a train journey that spans two continents and countless landscapes. You can stay a couple of days and enjoy Irkutsk’s highlights and then go to Listvyanka – a small settlement right on the shore of the enormous lake. We offer private tours that include transfer from the Irkutsk airport and will ensure a worry-free adventure in the area.
Enjoying the magnificent scenery, travelers can marvel at the wonderful sunsets and sunrises, made even more so spectacular by the clarity of the water. There are a number of landmarks nearby – a local indigenous people’s (Buryat) settlement, Olkhon – the largest island on the lake, and Shaman rock – a sacred place for Buddhists and Shamanists of the area. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, Lake Baikal is a true wonder for all nature and adventure admirers.
