The Tachkin Ballet Theater was established in 1994, so it is young in comparison to the other theaters in St. Petersburg. Despite its youth, it continues to develop the traditions of classical Russian ballet. The teachers are ex-soloists and performers of the Mariinsky Theater. The theater has already perfomed tours in the USA, UK, Germany, Spain and Belgium, among other countries. Its performers have become prize-winners of prestigious international ballet competitions. The theater´s repertoire includes such masterpieces as "Giselle", "Don Quixote", "Swan Lake" and others. Moreover, the theater performs a ballet by American choreographer Peggy Willis called "Diamond". Many spectators say that that theater has the unity of style and refinement in its productions that can only be achieved in St. Petersburg. The Hermitage Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Russia, was built by order of Catherine the Great in 1782-1785 to a design by the architect Giacomo Quarenghi. It was constructed in the austere Neoclassical style on the site of what was once Peter I's Winter Palace. Its unusual auditorium was designed to resemble an amphitheatre, the walls and columns decorated with coloured imitation marble. Statues of Apollo and the nine Muses are placed in niches, with bas-relief portraits of famous musicians and poets above them.
