Kostroma is as old as Moscow. Located on the left bank of the Volga River, it abounds in magnificent monuments of old architecture. Its picturesque suburbs have long been a source of inspiration for many Russian artists. The date of its foundation is considered to be 1152 and the founder Yury Dolgoruky. The outstanding role which Kostroma played at certain periods in Russian history accounts for the art heritage to be found in the city today. Among architectural assembles there are the Ipatievsky Monastery with sparkling golden cupolas, the Trinity Cathedral built in 1652. Among the exhibits, the Church of the Synaxis of the Virgin and the Church of the Transfiguration take the particular attention. Nowadays Kostroma is a nice combination of modern life and ancient traditions.
