Kaliningrad is the capital city of Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia. It has about 450,000 inhabitants. Before 1945 Kaliningrad was a German city known as Königsberg. This city is a Russian exclave wedged between Lithuania and Poland. What makes Kaliningrad an interesting short break destination is its rich and turbulent history, still very visible in its streets and people. Visitors will find an interesting mix of German architecture, large parks and communist era buildings and monuments. The city is a charming sea side resort enjoyed by German and Russian nobility over the centuries. Interesting fact is that Kaliningrad is the only ice-free Russian sea port on the Baltic Sea coast.
