Leon Bakst. The exhibition in the Russian Museum

Leon Bakst (1866-1924) is a world-known painter and costume designer. The famous Diaghilev's Ballets Russes partly owes its success to the outstanding costumes and decorations designed by Bakst. His art had an exceptional influence on further development of the performing arts across the world. Bakst became a unique example of the artist who combines innovativeness and traditions.

Bakst was one of the  founders of the community "The World of Art" and belonged to the close circle of writers and painters united by Sergei Diaghilev and Alexandre Benois. In his works the traditions of realistic art, the neoclassicism, the decorative elements of modern style are combined together. Special attention in his works were given to the heritage of the antique and medieval East. It is especially obvious in his theatrical works for such ballets as "Cleopatra", "Scheherazade", "Carnival", "Narcissus", "Daphnis and Chloe".

The exhibition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth. On the display will be approximately 100 paintings from the collection of the Russian Museum, and also some paintings collected from other museums. The exhibition is taking place in the Benois Wing of the Russian Museum, and will be open till the end of May.
